Role Overview
We have partnered with a leading macro hedge fund looking to hire a Junior Economist for their European Economics team. This role is integral to the firm`s research function, focusing on providing actionable macroeconomic insights for portfolio managers (PMs) and investment strategies. The successful candidate will specialize in analyzing European economies, ideally with experience covering France and/or the Netherlands. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the firm’s rigorous economic research function and collaborate with a globally respected team.
Key Responsibilities
- Economic Analysis and Research:
- Conduct in-depth economic analysis of European countries, focusing on France and the Netherlands
- Monitor GDP trends, fiscal accounts, inflationary pressures, elections, and other macroeconomic indicators
- Contribute to research outputs, internal publications, and structured economic analysis
- Back up team members on their respective tasks to ensure continuity
- Modeling and Data Management:
- Develop and refine economic models for country-specific and cross-regional analysis
- Maintain and enhance datasets, ensuring consistency and usability across the team
- Support the team’s economic modeling tools, applying consistent frameworks across all countries
- Collaborate with team members to ensure high-quality and timely research outputs
- Act as the team’s data manager, ensuring seamless updates and precise analyses
- Stay updated on fiscal cycles, regulatory changes, and other developments affecting European economies.
- Portfolio Manager Support:
- Provide proactive research ideas and respond to ad-hoc PM queries on European economies
- Deliver actionable insights, such as scenario analyses and the potential impacts of fiscal or monetary policy changes
Requirements & Qualifications
- 1–3 years of experience in a junior economist or research assistant role at an investment bank, asset manager, central bank, or research institute
- Master’s degree in Economics or a related field (preferred)
- Strong background in macroeconomic analysis, fiscal policy, and modeling
- Specific experience covering France and/or the Netherlands (highly desirable)
- Proficiency in economic modelling and programming tools such as Python; familiarity with Haver Analytics and Macrobond is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to manage large datasets with precision and consistency.
- Fluency in French or another European language would be advantageous
- Strong communication and analytical skills, with attention to detail and the ability to synthesize complex data
- A team player with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
