European Inflation Strategist
We are working with a leading global bank that is looking to hire an Inflation Strategist (EUR & UK Inflation) to join their successful G10 Rates Strategy team in London
In this role, the selected candidate will be focused on trade idea generation and producing original value-added research on EUR & UK rates/inflation markets, while also working collaboratively with Sales, Trading and other relevant areas of the bank to develop their client franchise.
Team Structure:
- 6 people in London (including this hire):
- Head of the team (Head of G10 Rates Strategy, Europe)
- 1 VP-level person covering at Cash & Swaps (EUR Market)
- 1 junior person who helps above person provide more fundamental value, supply data, supply vs QE, work on ratings (fundamental angle to it)
- 1 Director-Level Strategist covering Rates Options and Long-End Rates
- 1 Junior Strategist (recently off the grad program)
- Inflation Strategist (VP-Level)
- Focus of the team is EUR and UK Rates Strategy (and this is because there is a team in the US covering US markets and a team in Japan covering Asia).
- The team covers cash/swaps and all derivative instruments across the curve
- The team also does cross-region collaborations with other teams on trade ideas & research
- The team is very highly respected by the bank’s buy-side clients
- Good culture, very collaborative and we have placed 3 of the current team members (including person we are replacing who is retiring)
What will be the main output/responsibilities of this person:
- Focus is on publishing research & trade ideas for the banks’ trading desks & clients
- Sometimes a trade or piece will be written by the individual and sometimes there will be collaboration with other teams (such as the quant macro team or EM Strategy).
- Piece will get published and then this will be shared with sales to be put forward to clients.
- Ideas are pushed to external clients but also to internal clients
Key Responsibilities:
- Generating value-added trade ideas, market views and economic analysis within EUR & UK Inflation for the bank’s buy-side clients and the trading desks
- Extensive analysis of interest rate markets to provide clients and internal teams with market views/insights and actionable trade recommendations via face-to-face meetings and written publications
- Helping the trading desk with risk positioning
- Gathering inflation data and being able to take a strong view on the fixings
- Wants someone open to debate, a good cultural fit, someone who doesn`t mind digging into data when something she wants to invest.
- Writing and marketing (internally and externally) written reports on Rates Strategy views, with a particular focus on UK nominal and inflation and EUR inflation market.
- Leveraging themes, data models/analysis and trade ideas created by strategist colleagues globally.
- Helping drive cross-asset topical ad hoc flagship research pieces.
- Drive the key Global Markets forecasts and actively integrate the views across research – economics, rates credit, FX and local markets.
- Drive the integration of Strategy & Research product across the different regions globally
- Acting as a spokesperson for the global strategy team’s views, ideas and insights regarding global markets
Qualifications
- 5-10+ years’ experience
- Strong understanding of UK & EUR Inflation & Rates markets (any US experience is also a plus)
- A demonstrable history of working in markets to provide bespoke trade ideas using cash and derivative instruments (including inflation).
- Extensive experience and familiarity with rates research products.
- Previous experience working in trading or sales is a big plus (or at least working closely with the sales/trading teams to provide trade idea generation in a previous role)
- Python experience (preferred but not required)
- Existing experience in managing risk-on macro trades
- Strong knowledge of economics and statistics
- The ability to see stakeholders as well as external clients as “customers”
- Team-player mentality
Key success factors in first 12 months:
- Having had a lot of client interaction and being someone that is very liked and known amongst clients (external and internal)
- This person will have published several trades that have been working well and that have been profitable
- Being liked by the trading desk and being seeing as someone that is adding a lot of value
- Strong internal brand, being known across the business and liked by colleagues on multiple teams
Key Selling Points:
- Whole research team is very integrated across asset classes (EM, DM, Economists, Strategists across all asset classes) and the teams all work very closely together and have access to very senior people across asset classes.
- Very well respected franchise
