Flows Strategist
Role Overview:
We have partnered with a leading global financial institution looking to hire a Flows Strategist to join their Global Markets division. This is a newly created role with strong buy-in from senior management, reflecting the institution’s commitment to building a market-leading flows intelligence capability. As a high-impact position, this strategist will play a critical role in advising the business on expected flows, directly influencing both client strategies and internal trading decisions.
This senior, client-facing role focuses on analyzing, predicting, and advising on investor positioning and market flows across global asset classes. The successful candidate will leverage quantitative techniques, alternative datasets, and deep market expertise to anticipate flow-driven dislocations, generate trade ideas, and provide both external client advisory and internal trading desk insights.
Unlike traditional macro strategists, this role is dedicated purely to flow dynamics, requiring a specialist with expertise in investor positioning, liquidity trends, and systematic investment behavior. The strategist will act as a trusted advisor to institutional investors, hedge funds, asset managers, and the firm’s sales and trading teams, delivering actionable insights that directly impact market positioning and execution.
Key Responsibilities:
- Flow & Positioning Analysis
- Develop and maintain frameworks for tracking and predicting investor flows across equities, credit, rates, and macro.
- Analyze flow sources, including institutional investors, hedge funds, retail-driven flows, and systematic strategies (CTAs, risk-parity funds, etc.).
- Identify liquidity bottlenecks, crowded positioning risks, and major upcoming flows.
- Monitor derivatives markets, including options positioning, swap dealer exposure, and systematic rebalancing effects.
- Leverage internal and third-party data sources to create a comprehensive market flow picture.
- Client Advisory & Trade Idea Generation
- Act as a trusted advisor to institutional clients, providing flow-driven insights that enhance their trading strategies and execution decisions.
- Deliver high-quality, data-backed market views, highlighting positioning imbalances and liquidity trends.
- Generate trade ideas based on expected positioning shifts and supply/demand imbalances.
- Present insights to hedge funds, asset managers, and sovereign wealth funds, tailoring research to their specific investment strategies.
- Produce high-impact research reports, including daily flow updates, weekly positioning reports, and thematic deep dives into market risks.
- Internal Advisory for Sales & Trading
- Support trading desks with flow intelligence, ensuring traders understand how expected flows will impact market dynamics.
- Anticipate client flows before they materialize, advising sales teams on where demand is building or liquidity gaps may emerge.
- Help internal teams build custom tools and flow-tracking dashboards, collaborating with quantitative teams.
- Alternative Data Integration & Quantitative Research
- Combine internal, third-party, and public datasets into a structured flow intelligence platform.
- Leverage alternative datasets and machine-learning models to track positioning trends and build predictive frameworks.
- Work with quantitative analysts to extract deeper insights from ETF flows, options positioning, prime brokerage data, and capital movements.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- 10-15+ years of experience in market flow analysis, positioning risk, and systematic investment behavior.
- Strong macro background with expertise in market microstructure, investor positioning, and liquidity trends.
- Strong understanding of market microstructure, investor positioning, and liquidity trends.
- Experience in a buy-side or sell-side strategist, desk strategist, or PM seat with a primary focus on flow analysis.
- Data-driven and quantitative mindset, proficient in Python, SQL, R, or other analytical tools.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage with clients, traders, and executive leadership.
- Passion for understanding market positioning and flows, with a focus on flow dynamics rather than general macroeconomic analysis.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to anticipate positioning shifts and liquidity trends before they occur.
