Senior Continental Power Trader (SVP/Director)
We have partnered with a leading global bank looking to hire a Senior European Power Trader (Director) to join their London-based trading team. This is an expansionary hire aimed at strengthening the firm’s existing power trading platform and broadening coverage across continental European and UK power markets. The desk operates a flat, collaborative structure with an expectation that team members contribute across a wide range of products, including power, emissions, gas, and sparks/darks.
The ideal candidate will bring 8-15 years of relevant trading experience, preferably within flow or derivatives-focused environments, and possess strong knowledge of power markets. The role is open to individuals coming from either banks (with flow trading experience) or utilities (with a mix of physical and financial trading exposure), provided they demonstrate a commercial mindset and the ability to operate across interconnected products.
This opportunity sits within a well-established, institutional power and gas trading desk, and represents a strategic growth hire focused on expanding capabilities and deepening market presence across European power markets.
Key Responsibilities:
- Trade power products across continental Europe and UK hubs, focusing on both financial and physical markets
- Price and manage flat price risk within the power book across core Continental power hubs, including Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain
- Hedge and manage client flow efficiently, maintaining liquidity and competitiveness in core markets
- Monitor and trade across related products, including emissions, gas, and sparks/darks, leveraging cross-market insights
- Support UK Power trading activity and contribute to trading across interrelated markets such as gas and emissions
- Operate within a flat team structure, contributing collaboratively and flexibly across multiple product areas
- Maintain disciplined trading within defined risk parameters and the bank’s risk management framework
- Provide market insight and contribute to the growth of the power trading platform, identifying new opportunities and enhancing desk capabilities
Requirements & Qualifications:
- 8-15 years of trading experience in power markets, ideally with a background in flow trading or derivatives
- Strong understanding of physical power markets and linear instruments such as swaps and futures; any options experience is a plus.
- Previous experience at a bank (on a flow desk) or a utility with exposure to both physical and financial trading
- Demonstrated ability to manage flat price risk and hedge client flow across major Continental hubs (Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Spain)
- Familiarity with European (UK a plus) power markets and an understanding of emissions and gas trading dynamics
- Commercially minded with a collaborative approach and the ability to cover a broad product set
