Gas Trader
Role Overview
We have partnered with a top tier global bank to hire a Gas Trader for their London desk. This is a deliberate, growth-driven hire as part of a steady expansion of their gas capabilities.
The firm operates one of the largest and most established energy trading platforms in the market, with physical shipping capabilities, a strong balance sheet, and a well-developed client franchise spanning continental Europe and the UK.
The desk is flow-led, with a meaningful client franchise to service and maintain, but the platform actively encourages traders to take on speculative risk alongside their flow activity. This is not a pure prop seat, but there is genuine room to build a book once client obligations are met.
The team is structured to cover different areas across gas and power, with options coverage alongside, giving good depth around you and real room to grow.
The Role
The core mandate is European gas, with solid coverage expected across the continental hubs. As part of the desk’s ongoing expansion into global gas markets, the person coming in will also be expected to cover the US gas market during some evenings on a rotating basis. This is not the primary focus, but US gas experience is a meaningful differentiator and will be developed further in the role. JKM exposure is also well regarded. If you only have European gas experience, that is absolutely fine. The desk will bring you up to speed on the US side.
Key Responsibilities
- Trade European natural gas across the continental hubs, managing flat price risk and maintaining liquidity in core markets
- Price and manage client flow efficiently, hedging and managing risk across the book
- Cover US natural gas markets during some evenings on a rotating basis, contributing to the desk’s expansion into global gas
- Take on speculative risk alongside flow activity where appropriate, building and managing a prop book over time
- Work alongside the options desk where relevant, with JKM coverage also part of the expanded remit
- Contribute to the broader growth of the gas platform, identifying new opportunities and helping develop desk capabilities
Requirements
- Solid European gas trading experience with strong familiarity across the continental hubs
- Roughly 5 to 10 years of relevant trading experience
- US natural gas experience is a strong differentiator, candidates with both EU and US coverage will stand out
- JKM experience is well regarded; options or nonlinear exposure alongside linear is a plus
- Comfortable operating in a flow-led environment with an appetite to take on speculative risk when the opportunity is there
- Both linear and nonlinear traders are welcome, provided the core gas trading experience is there
